DEER WOMAN MONUMENT PROJECT
A 14 foot bronze sculpture to raise awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives (MMIWR)
For the Deer Woman Monument, we commit to collaboration with Indigenous communities, ensuring their stories, symbols, and voices lead the narrative. This monument is not ours to appropriate—it is a respectful offering, shaped with guidance from Indigenous wisdom and consent. Deer Woman stands as a shared call for awareness, rooted in cultural appreciation, not appropriation.”
WHO IS DEER WOMAN?
Across many Indigenous cultures, Deer Woman is a fierce protector of women and children. She represents strength, justice, and the sacred bond between earth and spirit.
WHY THIS MONUMENT MATTERS
The MMIWR crisis is a national and international tragedy. Indigenous women go missing or are murdered ten times more often than any other demographic– often with little or no investigation.
This monument brings visibility, healing, and hope. Her blanket of earth holds 350 faces – each representing a life stolen, a family grieving, a community demanding change. The red handprint across her face represents the silenced voices of the MMIWR. It signifies the lack of attention and action demanding justice and remembrance.
